As renowned filmmaker Michael Moore makes additional moves in his divorce case, it seems that his small community is atwitter with gossip about his marital dissolution. Michigan residents may be familiar with the popular documentary creator, who has taken on major organizations such as labor unions and other controversial topics during his career. He is currently engaged in a contested high asset divorce with his wife of 22 years.
Among the couple's assets: nine properties in both New York and Michigan, including a massive Manhattan condominium and a $2 million lake house. News reports show that there is a significant amount of acrimony surrounding property division during this divorce, with Moore claiming that his wife needlessly expanded their lake home without his permission. Further, Moore claims that his wife has downloaded and printed a variety of personal communications from his private email and text accounts; he is demanding that she disclose that information at once.
In a divorce case that is already sensational, additional allegations appear to continue to pile up, including drunk driving charges filed against Moore's wife in early July. Other bizarre occurrences include a requested inventory of the woman's quilt collection; she is an avid crafter who gave an exhibition several years ago and even runs a website about quilting. It is possible that Moore wants the inventory to use as a bargaining chip during their multi-million dollar divorce.
Contested divorces, especially those with high-value assets involved, can quickly become complicated. This is particularly true for those couples with significant business assets and other complex marital property. Like Moore and his wife, it is generally helpful for those facing high asset divorce to assemble a comprehensive legal and financial team to help them achieve a fair distribution of assets at the end of their marriage.
