Pennsylvania city facing backlog of child custody cases

The Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas is receiving some reinforcements from other judicial sections because of a backlog of family law cases. Officials in Pennsylvania say that the massive number of child custody cases making their way through the courts right now warrant additional assistance from other jurisdiction. Reports show that several judges will be pulled from other duties in order to attend to the family court issues.

Pennsylvania property division tough for same-sex couples

The right to divorce should accompany the right to marry; at least that is the stance taken by one outspoken Pennsylvania resident. The woman, who married her wife in 2008 in Massachusetts, has found that obtaining a same-sex divorce in her state of residence is far more difficult than she imagined. Pennsylvania simply does not have the legal infrastructure required to support same-sex division. Since couples cannot legally marry in that state, they also cannot legally divorce.

Property division litigation may be necessary for lobbyists

Divorce experts in Pennsylvania have been following the story of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin as they pursue a "conscious uncoupling" breakup based on mediation. Not everyone uses such mild methods for their own property division proceedings, however, as evidenced by news reports out of the nation's capital. Reports show that a powerful lobbyist is filing for divorce from his wife -- and fellow lobbyist -- in a Washington, D.C., court. The scathing document was followed by a countersuit from his estranged wife; the pair has been separated for more than a year and a half.

Skater Weir seeks divorce from husband, no prenuptial agreement

Pennsylvania residents may be familiar with Olympic athlete Johnny Weir, who provided commentary for the 2014 winter games. Weir is in the spotlight again, as he is reportedly seeking a divorce from his husband, Victor Voronov, and allegations of domestic abuse are flying in the case. The sensational proceedings are exacerbated by the fact that the couple did not obtain a prenuptial agreement before their wedding on New Year's Eve, 2011. This predicament could leave the couple locked in an ongoing legal battle over marital property, which includes luxury items such as a collection of prized handbags.
