Most Pennsylvania residents are used to hearing news of celebrity splits and divorces. In Hollywood, it often seems as if marriages and divorces are common and expected. It's somewhat rare then when an actor or actress remains married for more than 10 years.
Richard Gere and his wife Carey Lowell were two actors who defied the odds and successfully met the 10-year marriage mark. Recently, however, the couple announced they plan to divorce after 11 years of marriage.
The marriage to Lowell was the second for Gere who was previously married to model Cindy Crawford. This most-recent divorce marks the third for Lowell who has a grown daughter from a pervious marriage. Gere and Lowell also have a 13-year-old son together.
Many questions related to why the 64-year-old actor and 52-year-old actress split remain unanswered. Those who are familiar with the two, however, speculate that differences in personalities in lifestyle preferences may have played a role in their decision to split.
A seasoned and accomplished actor who starred in movies such as Pretty Woman and An Officer and a Gentleman, Gere is worth an estimated 45 million dollars. The couple also own a 12,000 square foot home that may be worth as much as 65 million dollars. In addition, it's likely the two also share numerous other assets that must now be divided or sold.
It's unclear whether Gere and Lowell had a prenuptial agreement. If so, matters related to the division of assets may be more clearly defined and therefore easier. If, however, the couple did not have a prenup, it's likely that divorce proceedings may drag on for months or even years. In addition to the division of properties, homes, personal effects and financial investments; child custody matters related to the couple's 13-year-old son must also be decided.
