A closer look at child support statistics

Every day, parents throughout the U.S. decide to separate or file for divorce. For some of these couples, there are a number of legal issues involving their children that arise, such as child custody and a child support dispute. In Scranton, and across the state of Pennsylvania, it is crucial for parents who are dealing with these matters to address their set of circumstances appropriately.

The website of the Administration for Children & Families provides helpful information regarding child support. According to the ACF, the average amount of child support that a family received in 2009 was $5,135. In 2009, these families also had an average income of $31,991. However, over the course of the same year, low income families only received $3,909 worth of child support, on average. Raising a child can be very difficult for any family, especially for those who are experiencing financial challenges. After all, with medical needs, extracurricular expenses and every day expenses, children often have a number of financial needs.

The United States Census Bureau also published informative child support statistics on their site. For example, the Census Bureau reports that fathers account for roughly 18 percent of custodial parents and that a majority of custodial parents have one child, based on findings from the 2010 Census. Furthermore, the Bureau reports that in 2011, roughly 62 percent of child support payments that were due were received, which highlights the prevalence of unpaid child support. Failure to pay child support can lead to serious consequences, including costly fines and even prison time, which stresses the importance of handling child support issues properly.
